SMART Recovery Community Circle

Change on Your Terms

People come to SMART Recovery with different experiences, different goals, and different ideas about what change looks like for them.

The program focuses on practical tools for self-management, decision-making, coping, and behavior change rather than requiring participants to adopt a particular label or recovery identity.

The goal is to help participants build skills, confidence, and support for the changes they choose to pursue.

The SMART Recovery 4-Point Program

SMART Recovery meetings are organized around four areas of self-directed change.

1. Build Motivation

Explore what matters to you, why you want change, and how to strengthen your motivation over time.

2. Cope With Urges

Learn practical ways to notice, understand, and respond to urges and cravings.

3. Manage Thoughts, Feelings & Behaviors

Explore how thoughts, emotions, choices, and behaviors can influence one another.

4. Live a Balanced Life

Build a life that includes meaning, relationships, health, activities, and priorities beyond addictive behavior.

Who Is SMART Recovery For?

This Community Circle is intended for adults who want support making changes in their own substance use or other addictive behaviors.

Considering Change

You do not need to have everything figured out before attending. Curiosity about change is enough to begin.

Actively Making Changes

Use practical tools to work toward your own goals and respond to challenges along the way.

Maintaining Change

Continue strengthening skills, motivation, balance, and support as your goals and life evolve.

You Do Not Need to Be Abstinent to Attend

SMART Recovery welcomes people with different personal recovery goals.

You do not need to be abstinent before attending a meeting.

The program does not prescribe one recovery goal for everyone. Instead, participants learn self-management and behavior-change tools that they can apply to their own goals and choices.

The expectation is that participants take part in a respectful way that allows the meeting to remain supportive for everyone.

Start Where You Are

SMART Recovery is an open mutual-support program.

You do not need to complete a particular sequence before attending, and long-term commitment is not required.

Participants may join when support or practical tools would be useful and return as often as they choose.

You are encouraged to participate, but you are not required to tell your entire story or disclose information you would prefer to keep private.

Thoughts & Beliefs

Notice unhelpful thinking patterns and practice more useful ways of responding.

Emotions & Stress

Explore how stress, emotions, and circumstances may influence behavior and choices.

Setbacks

Use setbacks as information for learning rather than as a reason to give up on change.

Life Balance

Strengthen relationships, activities, health, purpose, and other parts of life that support change.

Mutual Support, Not Treatment

SMART Recovery is a mutual-support and self-management program.

The local Community Circle is not detoxification, substance use disorder treatment, psychotherapy, medical care, or a substitute for individualized behavioral health or addiction treatment.

Participants who need medical support for withdrawal, medication management, mental health symptoms, or another individual clinical concern should connect with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Need Immediate Help?

A Community Circle is not designed to respond to a medical or behavioral health emergency.

If you or someone else may be experiencing a life-threatening emergency, severe intoxication, dangerous withdrawal, or another urgent medical concern, seek emergency medical care.

If you are experiencing a mental health or suicide crisis, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

A Respectful, Nonjudgmental Space

Participants may have different goals, experiences, and paths toward change.

The group asks participants to respect one another's autonomy and avoid judging, ranking, or prescribing another person's recovery goals.

Participants are also encouraged to respect the privacy of others and not share personal stories or identifying information outside the meeting without permission.

Because this is a mutual-support group, rather than a private one-to-one clinical encounter, share only what you are comfortable discussing in a group setting.
