Concussion Baseline Testing

Know Your Baseline Before the Season Starts

Preseason information that may help support future concussion evaluation.

Elevate offers concussion baseline testing for athletes before injury occurs.

Baseline testing captures selected information about balance, cognition, symptoms, and related measures that may later be available to a qualified clinician if a concussion is suspected.

Why Establish a Baseline?

A concussion can affect people differently, and an athlete's normal performance on certain tests may differ from another athlete's.

Preseason baseline testing provides information collected before a head injury occurs.

If a concussion is later suspected, a healthcare professional may be able to compare post-injury findings with the athlete's own baseline as one part of a broader clinical evaluation.

What Baseline Testing Can Provide

Baseline testing is intended to provide preseason reference information, not predict who will sustain a concussion.

Preseason Reference

Capture selected balance, cognitive, symptom, and related measures before injury.

Individual Comparison

Provide an athlete-specific reference point that may be useful during future clinical assessment.

Clinical Context

Give qualified healthcare professionals additional information to consider alongside the broader clinical picture.

Continuity

Help connect preseason testing with Mammoth Hospital sports medicine, athletic training, and rehabilitation resources when needed.

A Baseline Does Not Diagnose a Concussion

Concussion baseline testing is one tool within a larger concussion care process.

A baseline test cannot determine whether an athlete will sustain a concussion and cannot diagnose, rule out, or independently clear a concussion after an injury.

If concussion is suspected, the athlete needs an appropriate clinical evaluation regardless of baseline results.

Testing With SWAY Medical

Mammoth Hospital uses SWAY Medical as part of its concussion baseline and clinical assessment resources.

The SWAY platform includes mobile tools for assessing selected balance, cognitive, symptom, vestibular-ocular, and related measures.

Within Mammoth Hospital, authorized Athletic Training and Physical Therapy staff have access to SWAY within their clinical workflows.

Preseason baseline testing through Elevate helps create a reference that may later be available to the athlete's healthcare team when clinically appropriate.

What to Expect

Baseline testing is completed before injury and is designed to capture a consistent preseason reference.

Check In

Confirm registration information and receive instructions for the testing session.

Complete the Baseline

Complete the selected SWAY baseline protocol using a mobile device and guided testing instructions.

Create a Reference

The completed baseline becomes a reference that may support future clinical interpretation if needed.

What May Be Included?

The exact protocol may vary based on age, program, clinical guidance, and current Mammoth Hospital workflow.

Balance

Selected balance testing may be used to establish a preseason reference measure.

Cognition

Selected cognitive tasks may assess areas such as reaction, processing, memory, or related functions.

Symptoms & Related Measures

The testing protocol may also include symptom or other concussion-related information as appropriate.

Who Is Baseline Testing For?

Baseline testing may be useful for athletes participating in activities where concussion is a recognized potential risk.

Current Elevate community partnerships have included youth athletes participating in:

Hockey

Youth hockey athletes participating through local club and community programs.

Mountain Biking

Young riders participating in local mountain bike programs and teams.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Athletes participating in ski, snowboard, and related winter sport programs.

Other athletes and teams may also be appropriate for baseline testing depending on age, sport, current program availability, and clinical guidance.

Team Baseline Testing

Elevate can work with participating sports organizations to coordinate preseason baseline testing for groups of athletes.

Testing may take place at Elevate or, when operationally feasible, at an appropriate location selected with the team.

Group testing can make preseason screening easier to integrate into existing team preparation and reduce additional travel for athletes and families.

What About School Athletes?

Mammoth Hospital also provides athletic training support within local school athletic programs.

High school athletes may receive baseline screening and concussion-related support through their school athletic training workflow rather than through an Elevate community testing event.

This helps keep school athletes connected with their established athletic trainer and sports medicine care pathway.

If a Concussion Is Suspected Later

Having a baseline does not change the need for appropriate post-injury evaluation.

If an athlete sustains a head injury or develops symptoms concerning for concussion, the athlete should stop participating in activities that create additional head-impact or fall risk and receive appropriate clinical evaluation.

When available, the athlete's baseline information may be reviewed alongside symptoms, history, clinical examination, and other relevant findings.

Return-to-sport or return-to-recreation decisions should occur through the appropriate clinical pathway, not from baseline testing alone.

Connected to Mammoth Hospital Concussion Care

Elevate provides a community access point for preseason baseline testing, while Mammoth Hospital clinical teams provide post-injury evaluation and concussion care when needed.

Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, and other appropriate healthcare services may each play a role depending on the patient's injury, symptoms, and clinical needs.

This connection helps keep baseline information linked with the healthcare resources that may become relevant after an injury.

Baseline Testing Is Not a Medical Clearance Exam

Concussion baseline testing is an assessment and screening service.

It is not a preparticipation physical examination, medical clearance, concussion diagnosis, or individualized medical evaluation.

Athletes with current symptoms, recent head injury, new neurologic concerns, or another active medical issue should seek appropriate clinical care rather than relying on preseason baseline testing.

Individual Athletes & Teams

Baseline testing may be offered through scheduled community sessions, team partnerships, or other preseason opportunities.

Availability may vary based on season, age, sport, staffing, and current program capacity.

If you do not see an upcoming testing session, contact Elevate to ask about current individual or team options.

Where Is Testing Offered?

Baseline testing may take place at:

Elevate Wellness & Performance
121 College Parkway
Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546

Team testing may also be offered at another appropriate location when coordinated in advance and operationally feasible.

The specific location will be provided with the applicable testing session or team arrangement.

Preparing for Your Baseline

Follow the instructions provided with your specific testing session.

Because baseline testing is intended to reflect an athlete's usual preseason status, participants should let the testing team know if they are currently experiencing a recent head injury, significant illness, or another issue that may affect testing.

The testing team can determine whether the baseline should proceed or be rescheduled.

More Concussion Resources Are Coming

Mammoth Hospital is continuing to develop a more coordinated concussion pathway across sports medicine, athletic training, rehabilitation, and other clinical services.

As that work develops, this site can expand with additional resources for athletes, parents, coaches, and community members about concussion recognition, recovery, return to school, return to work, and return to sport or recreation.

For now, this page focuses specifically on preseason baseline testing.

Concussion Baseline Testing FAQs

What is concussion baseline testing?

Baseline testing captures selected information before an athlete sustains a head injury.

If concussion is later suspected, the athlete's preseason information may help a qualified clinician interpret post-injury findings as one part of a broader clinical evaluation.

Does baseline testing prevent a concussion?

No. Baseline testing does not prevent concussion and does not predict whether an athlete will sustain one.

Its purpose is to establish preseason information that may later be useful for comparison.

Can baseline testing diagnose a concussion?

No. Baseline testing does not diagnose or rule out a concussion.

Concussion is a clinical diagnosis that requires appropriate evaluation of the patient after an injury.

What is SWAY Medical?

SWAY Medical is a mobile assessment platform used by healthcare professionals for selected balance, cognitive, symptom, and other clinical measures.

Mammoth Hospital uses SWAY as part of its concussion baseline and clinical assessment resources.

Who has access to SWAY at Mammoth Hospital?

Current Mammoth Hospital users include Athletic Training staff within Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy staff within Outpatient Rehabilitation.

SWAY use occurs within appropriate clinical and program workflows.

What if an athlete already has concussion symptoms?

Baseline testing is intended for the pre-injury setting.

An athlete with symptoms after a recent head injury should receive appropriate clinical evaluation rather than completing a routine preseason baseline.

Can an entire team be tested?

Potentially. Elevate works with participating sports organizations to coordinate group preseason baseline testing.

Location, group size, age, staffing, equipment, and scheduling all influence how a team session is organized.

Can testing happen at our team's location?

When operationally feasible, baseline testing may be coordinated at an appropriate team-selected location.

Elevate will work with the organization to determine whether the space and logistics are suitable for testing.

What happens to the baseline if an athlete later gets a concussion?

When clinically appropriate and available, baseline information may be reviewed by the athlete's healthcare team as one component of the post-injury assessment.

The baseline does not independently determine diagnosis, recovery, or return-to-sport clearance.

Do high school athletes need to register through Elevate?

Not necessarily. High school athletes may receive baseline screening and concussion support through their school Athletic Training Program.

Athletes and families should follow the process established for their school or team.

How often should an athlete complete baseline testing?

The appropriate testing interval may depend on age, sport, team policy, clinical guidance, and the baseline protocol being used.

Follow the recommendation provided for the athlete's specific program or testing opportunity.

Is baseline testing a sports physical or medical clearance?

No. Concussion baseline testing is not a sports physical, preparticipation examination, or medical clearance for athletic participation.
